Activities through the Ages!

When visiting someone in a Nursing facility…

This topic is near and dear to my heart. I always observed a few fails and would love for you to enjoy your visit and more importantly have your loved one enjoy it.

First of all, if at all possible never visit on the same day or at the same time. Your loved one, even if the have dementia will expect your visit. However, this doesn’t really apply to late stage dementia.

Remember, most people do not want to be in a facility. They would rather be in their own home. Keeping that in mind, especially the first few months, if you ask questions about activities, food or care they will almost always tell you how bad everything and everyone is. I know hard it is so hear and sometimes it’s true. My own Mother had vascular dementia, so I have personal knowledge too. So, what do you do? Show up at meal times, however remember that facilities have certain dietary guidelines that they have to adhere to. Meet with the activity director and get a monthly calendar. Attend functions that you think your loved one will like. Listen to the negativity, but don’t argue. Be prepared to question the decision of the home you have chosen for your loved one. Usually, in time they will grow to love the nurses and care staff. I’ll soon be posting how to have a different kind of visit.

I’m praying for your journey……
